High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)
Our competition is generally sweetened with corn syrup, which also thickens and preserves. Compared with other ingredients, corn syrup is inexpensive. It may not cause insulin spikes like sugar, but evidence says it will rot your teeth, make you fat and give you heart disease. (See Appendix B.)

Kraft Foods is the largest manufacturer of barbecue sauces in the world. The primary constituent of their “Original” sauce is high-fructose corn syrup. Eighteen of the 24 sauces listed above have corn syrup as the primary or secondary ingredient. 24 of the 46 sauce ingredient lists we studied showed corn syrup among the first five ingredients. Of the 22 sauces that did not list corn syrup in the first five ingredients, 11 are Trader Joe’s products.
The mistaken impression that fructose is less harmful than sucrose is partly to blame for our unhealthy ways.
