Sugars
On the grill, sauces heavy with sugars and HFCS flame up, turn food black to the eye and into ash on the tongue. Inside, well, sugars get you burned there too. (Ask your doctor or just check that full-length mirror!)
As stated in the introduction, the US government is campaigning against obesity, and sugars are the targets. In , 2003 the Washington Post reported:
“According to the latest figures from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), consumption of various sweeteners, often in calorie-dense foods and drinks, has risen in the United States from an estimated 113 pounds per person in 1966 to 147 pounds in 2001.” http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A8003-2003Mar10?language=printer .
(See Appendix A for information regarding the harms associated with sugar consumption.)
How sweet are the WF competitors’ products? Having sampled mass manufactured sauces, we have one general observation – they are sticky sweet. Of the 46 sauces we analyzed, some kind of sugar (corn syrup, HFCS, sugar, evaporated cane juice, brown sugar or honey) was the:
- #1 – in 13 (28%)
- #2 – in 12 (26%), #1 or #2 in 25 (54%)
- #3 – in 8 (17%), #1 or #2 or #3 (71%)
